Gênes

Travel by Ouibus to Genova and fall under the spell of the capital of Liguria, Italy’s largest port. Everywhere you look you will see evidence of the city’s glorious past. There are so many sumptuous palazzos and churches in the old town that it’s hard to know where to start. The Palazzo Reale which dates from the 17th century now houses a museum: this is a great place to learn more about the city’s history through the fabulous collections amazed by the Durazzo family. The Palazzo Ducale was the Doges residence in the 14th century, and it’s now an art gallery. Admire the gorgeously stripy cathedral of San Lorenzo, built around 1098. Stroll down via Garibaldi past the stunning palazzos, in this area which is a Unesco world heritage site. If you’re ready for some opera, book yourself a ticket to a performance at the Teatro Carlo Felice, the main opera house. As the day comes to an end, join the locals in an aperitivo, a drink and a bike to eat at one of the city’s lively bars. Explore the Porto Antico, the old port area which was redeveloped by architect Renzo Piano, and has become a focal point of the city. You will have earned yourself a gotto (glass) of local white wine accompanied by a focaccia. Or try a baxeichito, a mojito made with basil instead of mint. And the most famous speciality of all to come from Genova is course the delicious green pesto Genovese. Only one question remains: how much pesto will you take back with you on the Ouibus from Genova?
