Things you need to know about Royan

Nestled on the Côte de Beauté, or “Beautiful Coast”, you will soon see that this area lives up to its name. The coastline will win you over with its natural charm and its many wonderful treasures waiting to be discovered. Let Ouibus take you to Royan, one of the largest seaside resorts on the Atlantic Coast. The town is characterised by mostly 1950s architecture interspersed with elegant villas dating from the 1920s: this is a seaside town with many facets, and one that was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Don’t miss out on the Royan Museum and the beautiful Notre-Dame church. Next, it’s time to hit the beach for a dip in the sea, or perhaps a surfing session, followed by a nice massage in the spa centre. Hungry? How about some oysters from Marennes-Oléron, sardines from Royan, charentais melons, or asparagus from Le Blayais? You’ll find a host of delicious local ingredients to enjoy in the restaurants in Royan. Try some of the hearty and filling traditional dishes such as the chaudrée (seafood chowder) or cagouilles (snails). And when it comes to drinks, pineau des Charentes (a sweet, fortified wine) is the local apéritif drink, while cognac is perfect for after dinner. Try bars such as Le Butterfly or Le Floor for drinks, before heading to the local disco or the casino. Perhaps the idyllic seaside setting will be your lucky charm? And if it’s time to go but you’re not ready to leave the seaside yet, don’t panic, you can always come back to Royan by Ouibus!
