Things you need to know about Vannes

Looking out towards the Gulf of Morbihan, Vannes is a charming medieval town boasting a south facing harbour. As soon as you arrive by Ouibus in Vannes you will notice the pleasant way of life in Vannes. Sheltered by its ancient city walls, the old town is a maze of cobbled streets with half timbered houses next to grand mansions. A proud bearer of the label “city of art and history”, Vannes is the capital of the Morbihan area. Go for a wander around the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre and the Museum of Cohue. Pass through the medieval fortified gateway known as the old prison gate, and enjoy a walk along the ramparts which border the Garenne. You’ll be rewarded with a superb view over the French style gardens beneath the Château de l’Hermine. Located below the ramparts, on the Séné, the old covered laundry with its slate roof and gallery is a pleasant place to visit. Hungry? Try a traditional Breton galette (a savoury buckwheat pancake with a variety of delicious fillings). It’s traditionally accompanied by an earthenware cup of local cider. Next, walk it off with a stroll to the Presqu’île de Conleau, a promontory from which you can admire the gulf and its islands, watching the boat traffic coming in and out. Vannes has some of the last shipyards where wooden boats are made. Back in the city, stop for an ice cream or a coffee at a sunny café in the harbour and start thinking about your next trip with Ouibus…
